Homesickness

Just finished calling my brother. He and his family are in the Swiss Alps skiing. I just had my first bout of homesickness in 13 years of being in the US. I remembered the skiing, the atmosphere of the chalets made of larch, the snow, the apres ski gathering with friends, eating fondue…. I am also reminded of Pema Chodron, who says a feeling last on average 90 seconds unless you keep it alive through your self-talk.

Meditating on my feeling of homesickness what strikes me most is the specific atmosphere of that place in the Swiss Alps with its rugged mountains and high peaks (such as the Dent Blanche in the picture), the chalets made of larch wood darkened by age. A sense of homeness for me relates to this atmosphere. Letting myself sense the powers of this place I feel homesick about, I notice my mind slowing down. I imagine becoming the weathered chalets, a witness of the times passing, being in awe of the scenery, nature, us humans inhabiting this world for a short time…
